Finally - I Finished a Fairy!

It's taken me a while to fit it in around my other commitments, but tonight I finally managed to finish the fairy I have been working on for a friend's toadstool cake. I was terrified her head would come off as I was putting the hair on!

I am a big fan of Lorraine McKay - she produces the most amazing figures! I would love to attend one of her workshops but in the meantime, I made do with her "Heads Up" e-tutorial, which was very helpful - although I know I need to have lots more practice (I found the mouth particularly difficult....so it's rather fortuitous that she's looking downwards towards the butterfly) I think it's a half decent start.

I thought it would be really nice to do something a little different for her wings. I was fascinated by a technique developed by Diane Simmons which uses gelatin to create beautiful flowers and butterflies - ably demonstrated by Cindy'sConfections. I haven't been able to track down a source in the UK for the veining sheets, so improvised with an all-in-one veiner and cutter. It was only partially successful (luckily I managed to salvage usable wings), so needs further practice!
